History

The kids' karate program has been running for over 20 years at the North York YMCA. The program is overseen by internationally recognized black belt instructors. The high quality of our instructors is maintained through the supervision and guidance of our chief instructor, Sensei Waith, who has more than 35 years of international experience and has obtained the level of 7th Dan.

The following individuals are your main karate kid's instructors:

Sensei Riadh, 4th Dan, was asked to take over as the head kids' karate instructor in 1996. Since then, under his supervision, the kids' karate program has expanded to include junior and senior classes, with the addition of a very successful Karate YLC (Youth Leader Corps) program. The kids' karate program has seen tremendous growth under his leadership and continues to be cited as a model example for kids' programing in the YMCA community. Sensei Riadh oversees the day to day activities of the kids' karate program, with a large focus on the YLC program.

Sensei Shima, 3rd Dan, began teaching in the kids' karate program in 2000 after graduating from the youth karate program. Sensei Shima helps with the day to day activities of the kids' karate program and mainly teaches the advanced students, both in the junior and senior kids' program.
