Students 6 years and older can sign up for the waiting list at the membership desk in the basement level of the North York YMCA.

Please wear comfortable clothes. There is no jewelry, watches, socks and shoes allowed during class. Please leave all valuables at home.

We prefer that your child tries the class out for at least a month to make sure it is a good fit before you purchase a karate gi (uniform).

A gi can be purchased through our club for $35 (light weight gi). You can order a karate gi during the first week of the month. Gis take about two to three weeks to arrive. Please refer to the Equipment Forms [link] for more information. We recommend that students attend a number of classes before purchasing a uniform.

The grading syllabus covers grading techniques and requirements from 10th kyu to 1st kyu. The syllabus book should be brought to all classes.

The grading syllabus book is available for $5.00 and can be purchased from Sempai Devlin.  Note: Students in the kilds' program will receive a free grading syllabus after passing their first grading.

The dove crest costs $10 and can be purchased from Sempai Devlin. All students have to have a Wado crest, on the left side on their uniform, before being able to grade. Note: students going for their first grading do not have to have the crest.

Fighting gloves can be purchased through our club for $25. You can order a fighting glove during the first week of the month. Fighting gloves take about two to three weeks to arrive. Please refer to the Equipment Forms for more information. Note: Only students 6th kyu (green-belt) and up are required to have fighting gloves.

Students, 6th Kyu (green-belt) or higher, are required to bring their grading book to all karate classes. Mouth guards and fighting gloves can be brought to class the last week of each month. This equipment can be ordered during the first week of each month. If a student does not bring their equipment to class, they will be asked to train with a beginner group.

Please speak to a North York YMCA staff, at the membership desk on the basement level, or by calling, (416) 225-9622, about the additional fees for students under 16 years of age.

Students may be considered for grading only after they have demonstrated the technical ability and level of maturity appropriate for their age and kyu level. During grading please make sure the following steps have been taken:
  • You must have a club patch. See Sensei Devlin to buy one ($10 each);
  • You must have a clean karate gi (not including beginners);
  • The correct grading fee; and
  • Sufficient attendance.
If any of the above items are missing you will not be able to grade. If you are unable to meet your grading day/time please speak to an instructor prior to the grading date.
Kids' grading fees are currently as follows:

Kyu Level  Cost
9h kyu (1st white belt grading) $5.00
White belts $10.00
Green belts $15.00
Brown belts $15.00

There are two levels of passing during grading:
  • 1st class: The student must be able to demonstrate an excellent level of technical ability and maturity during regular classes and especially during grading.
  • 2nd class: The student must be able to demonstrate a satisfactory level of technical ability and maturity during regular classes and especially during grading.
If the student does not demonstrate enough technical skills to pass, they will have to repeat the grading at the next scheduled grading.

Gradings occur twice a year. Students will be notified in advance of the grading date and time. If your child can not attend the scheduled grading time please speak to an instructor before hand.

White-belt students can only attend one class per week (and only for the day they have registered). All colour-belts are required to attend an average of two classes per week.

Students who miss more than two consecutive weeks, without informing the instructors prior or during the absenteeism, will be permanently removed from the class list. You can email instructors at ny.wadoryu@hotmail.com.

Latecomers must do the following:
  • Find a place away from the main entrance of the dojo;
  • Five (5) jumping jacks for each minute they are late;
  • Kneeling bow (3 bows); and
  • Wait in Sei-za (kneeling) until an instructor asks them to join the class.
Note: if a student is more than 15 minutes late, they will not be allowed to join the class as this disturbs the flow of the class.

The Karate Youth Leader Corp (YLC) is a collaborative effort with the YMCA and the karate program at the North York YMCA. It is our goal to encourage youth that are involved in the Karate program to contribute and develop leadership skills through a variety of courses and seminars. These leadership skills are further developed by helping to teach the junior classes. We welcome students 10 years and older and those who have received their first black strip (8th Kyu) to become involved and give back to their community through this enriching process. Note that you will also qualify for volunteer hours as needed for the current high school curriculum. Please see Sensei Riadh for more information.

As an existing student you will be reregistered in September of every year as long as you attend at least one class in September.

Note: Students who only attend saturday classes can choose to attend either a tuesday or thursday before or after the long weekend to make up for the missed saturday class. Instructors will announce any break that the karate program will take.
