  • Shiomitsu Sensei Clinic Reflection by Sempai Domenico

Sensei Shiomitsu, 9th Dan Shihan, has been visiting our organization since the 1980s. I have noticed that in the last ten years Sensei has developed a higher level of body movement and attained such a deep understanding of how to use the his body to maximaze weight and therefore power. I have often wondered how difficult it must be for him to translate this transcendence to his students. And so with every seminar lesson Sensei tries to reinforce and reiterate how to relax and use our bodies properly.

There are some common themes that Sensei has been teaching on. Firstly, he has taught us how to use our back muscles while punching. He demonstrated how to punch without concentrating on your fist but letting the punch come from your hip. He also, through the use of detailed notes, taught how to use your muscles in kicking. Specifically he spoke about maegeri. By relaxing his body and using his core muscles Sensei demonstrated how a 67 year old can kick faster than a 20 year old!

He spoke at great length on how to move with your body. Sensei used the art of Japanese Noh theatre as an example. In Noh actors move forward in short steps using their core muscles and moving their legs with their body. Sensei showed how this kind of movement should be used in our karate.

Our advanced class focused on all the above points but also included an in depth look at Kushanku. Sensei shared his kaisetsu interpretations which gave us a powerful and unique look at ways in which we can develop our kata.

He also lectured on the finer point of yakuso kumite. As always, sensei spoke about how Wado comes from kenjitsu and how we should keep this in mind. He spoke about the syle of Kage-Ryu Kenjitsu where students study the shadows or hidden elements of fighting and so too should we in Wado. He demonstrated all the different timings and how partners should work together whilst executing all our partner work. He showed how both the attacker and the defender should be completely relaxed or else the proper technique will be completely lost.

We are truly lucky to have such a master come to visit twice a year. The example of his improvement should serve more as an inspiration to us all to strive harder to attain a deeper understanding of ourselves and our karate.
