  • First Karate Ontario Grand Prix - 2008

This past weekend Karate Ontario held the first provincial competition of the season. We are very pleased to have had a number of our youth competing against other karate schools in Ontario and commend them all for doing such a great job.

A lot of hard work and effort goes into preparing for a competition, and it’s great to see that our competitors have returned with such great results.

Our 10 competitors have returned with 11 medals!

A big thank you goes to Sensei Alex Waith for all his work and expertise, and to his coaching staff Sempai Riadh, Sempai Victor and Sempai Sanaz for dedicating their whole Sunday to the competitors on competition day.

  • Winter Wado Course in England

The "Wado Ryu Karate Academy":http://www.wado.academy.btinternet.co.uk/Main.html which is affiliated to the "International Federation of Wado Ryu Karate-Do Organizations":http://www.wado-ryu.jp/home1/home1.htm holds a Winter Course in England every two years with Saiko Shihan Ohtsuka, Grand Master of Wado Ryu, attending as the Principal Instructor. The course is hosted by the Academy Chief Instructor and founder, Shiomitsu Masufumi Sensei, 9th Dan who is also in charge of foreign countries for the International Federation.

The course is currently open only to Academy members and is usually attended by the Chief Instructors and representatives for the countries in Europe, Canada and USA

Training is carried out usually at the Guildford Spectrum Sports Center in Guildford, Surrey from 10 am to 2 pm over 5 days in February. At the end of the course there is a Dan grading for eligible members who have attended the full course. Ohtsuka Sensei is assisted on the course as necessary by Shiomitsu Sensei as well as senior instructors of the Academy and this year included Ohtsuka Sensei's son Kazatuka Ohtsuka Sensei who is now living in France and is an official instructor of the Academy.

Each day is typically started by warm ups, exercises and sometimes basic partner routines which are done by one of the instructors. This will last for around 30 to 45 minutes and then Ohtsuka Sensei will take over for the remainder of the time. Rotation for the starting routines this year was done between Shiomitsu Sensei , Kazatuka Ohtsuka Sensei and George Grimes Sensei.

Shiomitsu Sensei emphasized his routine and exercises for relaxed and powerful technique for which he is well known in the Wado world. Kazatuka Sensei showed some interesting exercises and also drills from a prone position which isolated the body movement and encouraged relaxed action required for proper Wado technique. His routine also included emphasis on how to use the body in kicking the "Wado way" compared with some other styles or methods of kicking. Grimes Sensei routine included interesting partner drills using _Nagashi Uke_ techniques and at times somewhat similar to the sticky hand drills of Wing Chun Kung Fu.

Ohtsuka Sensei's program throughout the course followed a progression which started with drilling on the spot from basic stances and repeating techniques including punches, blocks and a combination of these in a rhythmic and continuous action and at different levels. This routine included kicking drills. He explained as before in other courses that this kind of practice/drill was useful particularly if one has limited space to train. During the course he also included the fundamental basic training of Wado basics such as _Kette_ and _No Tsukomi_ techniques. A wide variety of techniques for partner training in _Yakuso Kumite_ were taught in _Sanbon Kumite_ (three step sparring style) using a variety of defense techniques and combinations of these with multiple counter attacks incorporating punching, striking and kicking attacks with _Tai Sabaki_ and _Ashi Barai_. Several Idori techniques were also taught and specific references made to Kihon Kumite movements.

  • Sunsplash Gashuku Experience

Nine members of our Dojo, including Sensei Alex Waith attended the "1st International Wado-Ryu Karate-do Sunsplash Gashuku ":http://www.surreykarate.co.uk/sunsplash08packet.pdf which ran from August 7-10 2008 in Orlando Florida. The clinic was conducted by M. Shiomitsu Sensei, 9th Dan Hanshi and hosted by Tyrone Pardue and the American Wado-Ryu Karate-Do Academy. Our members were a mixture of Black, Brown and Green belts and included both adults and youth which complemented the other groups. Training sessions were quite interesting as we experienced the different Wado styles from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM each day which left plenty of time to socialize with other attendees who were from the USA, the UK and Norway as well as explore the nearby theme parks such as Universal and Disney. Hotel accommodations were great and quite near to everything and also served as the gathering point for the participants. The next Sunsplash Gashuku is planned for three years from now and I am looking forward to it.
